Hey Folks! Well, I can't believe it but we have finally made it safely to Hawaii! It was an extremely long day of air travel especially with an 80 lb. chocolate lab on my lap. We are still tediously getting unpacked and I can tell you that I will be a very happy gal to not see cardboard boxes and wrapping paper for a long while. The camera gear has been found and I'm ready to get trigger happy. The neighborhood sights and sounds just for these first few days have been a sensory overload! So many new wonderful bird species just in the backyard waking me up at 0530, and I love it. I'm so glad that the neighborhood has such a diverse eco-system since the Hawaiian transit system is a nightmare. I'm slowly figuring out how to navigate through the chaos of traffic, construction, and with limited GPS guidance to find the beauty of the island. Again, thankfully, the local neighborhood birds are extremely active and my favorite so far is the Japanese white-eyed (called the Mejiro, in Japan) which was introduced onto the islands in 1927 and they have flourished here eating fruits and insects. They are my favorite bird thus far because they remind me of our warblers in Virginia. It doesn't appear that there are many mammals on the island but the one that is truly invasive and can be seen darting from the brush to small dens in the ground is the mongoose. I was thrilled to be able to photograph one since they are speedy devils, they seem cute now but my guess is that they are going to be a nasty pest...we shall see. There is still much to do on the Homefront but I will definitely start getting out and adding to the galleries. All NEW photos will always be at the very top of each page so you won't have to go far to see the new findings of birds and mammals. I will be adding a landscaping/sea life page soon too. My plan is to get pictures up by the end of every week and write a small post. I hope you will keep coming back and joining me here! Feel free to send this on to other friends that might like to view the photographs.
