Humuhumunukunukuapua`a

That's right, say that title 3 times fast! The Humuhumunukunukuapua`a is Hawaii's State Fish, also known as a reef triggerfish which is much easier to pronounce! It is an amazing fish with brilliant colors of orange, yellow, black, blue and red. We were able to see them first at the Honolulu Aquarium but later ventured to the western/windward side of the island to Kaena Point State Park where the highway literally ends at a 30 foot drop off on a volcanic cliff. We researched this location and were surprised to find out that it is the number 7th best spot in Oahu to fish. Hesitantly, we rigged up our rods and headed up to a fishing spot that was precariously dangerous. Rather than fish at the same time we took turns and spotted each other since this type of extreme fishing was new to my son and I. After a few mishaps and lost rigs to the rocks below we started getting into a rhythm of successful bites and landed several Humuhumunukunukuapua`a and two stunning Christmas wrasse. They weren't huge fish but gave a good little fight. I'm not sure how someone would land a big fish and be successful on reeling it up the 30 foot cliff. The highlight for me though, besides being with my son, was looking back over my shoulder to the majestic mountains behind me and soaring along the cliff line, gracefully swooping up the side of the mountain was life bird #326 a White-tailed Tropicbird. It was stunning, all white with a long central tail, unfortunately I did not have a camera on me at the time but will get photos of these birds on another trip out.

Continuing our quest for exotic fish we made a trip up to Shark's Cove on the North shore. Sharks cove is a snorkeling mecca and in spite of the name there are no sharks but well over 30 species of fish to be seen. This was a snorkeling trip that will surely never be forgotten. Entering the cove we immediately were greeted by triggerfish, parrotfish, pufferfish, convict tangs, moorish idols, bluefin trevally, orange spotted tangs, sea urchins and sea cucumbers just to name a few! I can't wait to get underwater gear and show you these spectacular species! Until then, I have enclosed an iPhone shot that I took of the Humuhumunukunukuapua`a at the aquarium.

We had to finish our adventures early this week due to the impending Hurricane Lane, sadly, sending our son back to FSU early. At this time HST 10:51 am, we have had some wind gusts up to 30mph and some light rain but the major effects are not due till later tonight. I know we are safe and we have all our hurricane supplies on hand if this storm decides to keep heading north rather than turn. Until next week, practice your pronunciations! Check out the Landscapes Gallery and as always hug your family!
